Check-in Review: Power Rangers Megaforce… Making Samurai Look Decent in 20 Episodes

.

TYPE OF REVIEW : CHECK-IN REVIEW
No spoilers since there is no plot to spoil.

It’s hard to believe the first half of Power Rangers Megaforce is already over. (And yeah, I consider Megaforce, Super or not one season. Because why would anyone want the idea of two seasons of a Megaforce or a Samurai anyway?)

But yes, there actually were 20 episodes of Power Rangers Megaforce this year. And when you think about those 20 episodes, all the feelings of disappointment and annoyance are coupled with the half-season itself being meaningless and hollow. Continue reading

Commentary: On Amit Bhaumik’s Power Rangers Samurai – What Could Have Been

^shogun86 on deviantART

Back when Power Rangers was on its deathbed, fans were thinking that maybe part of the reason was Disney just didn’t want to go through the trouble of adapting the very-Japanese Samurai Sentai Shinkenger for American and international audiences.

It’d be an impossible task, they said. It’d be too hard, they said. Why bother? they said.

But really, anything is possible, even adapting a heavily Japanese story as long as you have creative and willing people to do it. They’d find a way.

Little did anyone know, turning Shinkenger into Power Rangers Samurai was as easy as plugging the original Japanese scripts into Google Translate and filming them.

Now there’s no need to reiterate how disappointed I was with Samurai, since I already wrote about it here and in pretty much every episode recap of the season(s).

But looking back, I will say Samurai was such a wasted opportunity. Being a direct translation wasn’t the problem, it was being a bad direct translation. It all could’ve been just fine with some tweaks here and there, but instead, it turned into a horribly dumbed down version of the original.

At the same time, I’m starting to look at Samurai in a more positive light compared to the current Megaforce. You could pass off Samurai being inadequate as a result of translating episode-for-episode. So what’s Megaforce‘s excuse?

But that’s a topic for another day.

What brings me back to Samurai though almost a year after it ended is my just reading of Amit Bhaumik’s original proposal/plan for the season he had posted in August. Continue reading

Hindsight Review: So, What Happened with Power Rangers Samurai? No, Seriously. What Happened?

TYPE OF REVIEW : HINDSIGHT REVIEW
No spoilers. Just lots of ranting.

Indeed. What did Power Rangers fans experience these last two years?

After Power Rangers RPM and during the last gasp, misguided re-versioned Mighty Morphin, I think many if not most fans accepted that Power Rangers was pretty much done.

Believing the franchise ended on a high note with RPM, I was one of those fans. Which is what finally helped me open up to where Power Rangers was born out of.

I started watching Samurai Sentai Shinkenger when, to my surprise, I realized having no Power Rangers left a hole in my life. And Super Sentai filled that hole. I loved it and immediately became a fan.

Then the huge news broke. Haim Saban and his vast fortune would reclaim the franchise he helped create and take it to Nickelodeon where it conceivably would enjoy a much better platform than Disney was willing or able to give at the tail end of their ownership.

Fast forward to February 7, 2011. After plenty of shiny promos and the promise of morphing in high definition for the first time in 18 years, Power Rangers Samurai premiered, in primetime, on Nickelodeon.

And that’s where it all started. Despite marveling at Continue reading
